Einweihung des Ausstellungsgebäudes „Gerhard Richter BIRKENAU”
Das Internationale Auschwitz Komitee, die Stadt Oświęcim und die Stiftung für die Internationale Jugendbegegnungsstätte in Oświęcim/Auschwitz haben die Ehre, Sie zur Einweihung des Ausstellungsbaus Gerhard Richter BIRKENAU einzuladen.
Die Eröffnung der Ausstellung wird am 28. Februar um 17.00 Uhr in der Internationale Jugendbegegnungsstätte in Oświęcim/Auschwitz stattfinden.
Die Eröffnung wird von einem Vortrag von dr Delfiny Jałowik, die den Birkenau-Bilder vorstellt.
Im Jahr 2020 entschied Gerhard Richter, dem Internationalen Auschwitz Komitee ein Editionsexemplar seiner Birkenau -Bilder als Dauerleihgabe für eine Ausstellung in Oświęcim zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die Idee des „Gerhard Richter Birkenau” Ausstellungshauses in Oświęcim wurde seit dem Jahr 2020 von Christoph Heubner, Schriftsteller und Exekutiv- mit Gerhard Richter und Frau Sabine Moritz-Richter in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Internationalen Auschwitz Komitee, der Stiftung für die Internationale Jugendbegegnungsstätte in Oświęcim /Auschwitz und der Stadt Oświęcim entwickelt: Gerhard Richters architektonischer Entwurf des Gebäudes wurde bei der baulichen Planung und Ausführung von dem Architekten Edwin Heinz -GMS Architekten PartGmbH Isny/Allgäu und dem Architekturbüro Susuł&Strama Architekci Oświęcim betreut und realisiert. Der Bau des Ausstellungshauses Gerhard Richter Birkenau wurde durch eine Spende der Volkswagen AG ermöglicht.
Das Ausstellungsgebäude präsentiert eine Edition der Birkenau-Serie: vier abstrakte Kompositionen, die in der einzigartigen Technik des Drucks auf Metallplatten hergestellt wurden, sowie einen acht Meter langen grauen Spiegel und Kopien von vier Fotografien, die 1944 von Mitgliedern des Sonderkommandos in der Nähe der Gaskammer und des Krematoriums 5 in Birkenau heimlich aufgenommen wurden.
Diese vier Fotografien, die 1944 von Häftlingen des Sonderkommandos heimlich und unter Einsatz ihres Lebens aufgenommen wurden, gelten als die einzigen fotografischen Dokumente des Holocaust, die die Ermordung und Verbrennung der Leichen der jüdischen Bevölkerung in Auschwitz dokumentieren. Für den Maler Gerhard Richter bildeten sie den Ausgangspunkt und die Grundlage für den 2014 entstandenen Birkenau Zyklus. Beeindruckt von diesen Fotografien beschloss er vor vielen Jahren, das Thema wieder aufzugreifen und schuf vier abstrakte, großformatige Gemälde, die bereits unter anderem in Dresden, Berlin, Moskau und New York gezeigt wurden.

Tour begins at the Kosciuszko Square, formerly known as New Market. There is situated the Tomb of an Unknown Soldier, with Order of Virtutti Militari. Nowadays, it is a place of patriotic celebrations. Being in this place the neo-Gothic church of Our Lady of Sorrow is worth seeing, inside of which are pictures of St. Francesco of Assissi and St. Anthonio of Padova and also Pieta’s sculpture from the beginning of the 20th century.
Then we advise you to go through the Small Market Square in the direction of the Municipal Building, next to which there is a suburban villa, initially belonging to dr. A. Ślosarczyk but now functioning as the Wedding Palace.
On the other side of the street there is The Salesian Church where in its courtyard you can admire St. Jack’s Chapel – the only preserved element from the Dominican monastery complex, dating from the first half of 14th century. In the crypt there are 100-year-old remains of the dukes, castellans and benefactors of the Dominican monastery in Oświęcim. This facility is opened to the public after phone consultation with a priest pastor.
Going out from the Salesian Society, turn left going along the Soła river. At this point, till the Second World War, there were buildings of the Jewish quarter including The Great Synagogue, hospital and school.
Now, even from afar, you can see the hill, where is situated the Oświęcim Castle with its view tower from XVIII th century. This is one of the oldest building from brick in Małopolska and the highest preserved Gothic wall in the south of Poland. Nowadays in the castle there are historical and ethnographic collections relating to the history of more than 800-year-old city on the Soła River.
After descending the hill go up the stairs to the ks. Skarbka Square, where recently stands renovated The Lomdei Misznayot Synagogue and the Jewish Museum. Nowadays, Jewish Museum serves religious and educational function by organization exhibitions and conferences.
In front of the Jewish Centre there is Parish Church. The present church stands in this place instead of the wooden one, which had existed in XIIth century in Oświęcim. In this church, we can see XVIIth century crucifix with a very expressive magnificient statue of Jesus Christ. Also pay attention to the life-sized figures of St. Peter and St. Paul located at the main altar. Then go across the street toward the main square, which shows the urban layout of Oświęcim at the turn of the XIVth and XVth century, with many tenements. The greatest is Ślebarskis’ house which is currently a seat of the Local Court of Law in Oświęcim. There is also worth to pay attention on the pharmacy building with characteristic arcades in which during the Second World War was located Hotel Hertz. Józef Piłsudski stayed at this hotel on Feb. 7, 1915.

TRASA 4 – DOLINA RZEKI SOŁY
Prezentowana ścieżka dydaktyczna została zaprojektowana w taki sposób, aby przynajmniej częściowo przedstawić olbrzymią bioróżnorodność obserwowaną na obszarze chronionym – „Dolina rzeki Soły”. Ścieżka pomyślana jest także jako pomoc dla nauczycieli biologii i geografii, którzy w ramach swoich zajęć mogą przejść z uczniami zaproponowana trasę i przeprowadzić bogato ilustrowane lekcje w terenie. Przejście całej trasy zajmuje ok. 4-5 godzin. Ścieżkę można zwiedzać w ciągu całego okresu wegetacji (tzn. od kwietnia do października) jednak najlepszą porą jest okres od maja do sierpnia, zwłaszcza w godzinach porannych. Proponowana trasa ma ok. 3,5 km długości, a podzielona została na siedem odcinków dydaktycznych, oddzielonych siedmioma stanowiskami obserwacyjnymi.
Dojazd. Należy dojechać do przystanku autobusowego MZK linii nr 4 „Kamieniec Pętla”; jest to końcowy przystanek autobusu tej linii. Dojechać tu nim można z następujących przystanków: „Kruki”, „Miasto”, „Polmozbyt”, „Błonie”, „Dworzec PKP”, „Zasole I”, i „Stare Stawy”. Następnie udajemy się droga gruntową w kierunku południowym nad staw Kamieniec, na którego zachodnim brzegu rozpoczyna się omawiana poniżej ścieżka przyrodnicza. Opis trasy wg Dolina rzeki Soły. Przewodnik po ścieżce dydaktycznej autorstwa Jana Żarnowca i Aleksandra Herczeka. Szczegółowych informacji można szukać w powyższym przewodniku, a także w Towarzystwie na rzecz Ziemi tel.: (0-33) 844 19 34, 842 21 20.
STANOWISKO OBSERWACYJNE NR 1
Zlokalizowane jest mniej więcej w połowie zachodniego brzegu stawu Kamieniec. W miejscu tym można zapoznać się z budową ekosystemu stawu, roślinami i zwierzętami wodnymi oraz związanymi z siedliskami nadwodnymi i błotnymi.
Pierwszy odcinek dydaktyczny łączy 1 i 2 punkt obserwacyjny; ma ok. 250 m długości. Trasa początkowo biegnie wzdłuż brzegu stawu w kierunku południowy n, a po przejściu ok. 80-100 m odbijamy w prawo (na zachód) i po przecięciu utwardzonej drogi prowadzącej do ogródków działkowych, wchodzimy na wał przeciwpowodziowy Soły. Poruszamy się po ścieżce na wale w kierunku północnym, wzdłuż użytku ekologicznego „Łęg Stare Stawy” – aż do północno-wschodniej granicy chronionego tu lasu łęgowego. Odcinek ten umożliwia zapoznanie się z roślinnością synontropijną oraz florą i fauną terenów podlegających sukcesji wtórnej.
STANOWISKO OBSERWACYJNE NR 2
Położone na wysokim brzegu Soły, w luce pomiędzy północno-wschodnią ścianą użytku ekologicznego „Łęg Stare Stawy”, a gęstymi zaroślami wierzbowymi ciągnącymi się w dół rzeki, służy do omówienia zagadnień związanych z ekosystemami rzecznymi. Drugi odcinek dydaktyczny łączy 2 i 3 stanowisko obserwacyjne; ma ok. 500 m długości. Po wycofaniu się znad rzeki na wał, poruszamy się po nim w kierunku północno-wschodnim, a następnie podążamy drogą asfaltową (koło przystanku komunikacji miejskiej) i dalej – ścieżką wzdłuż Soły, aż do miejsca znajdującego się naprzeciw terenów zrekultywowanego śmietniska odpadów komunalnych. Odcinek ten przeznaczony jest do omówienia zagadnień związanych z naturalnym odradzaniem się zbiorowisk lasów łęgowych oraz wpływem człowieka na ten typ ekosystemów.
STANOWISKO OBSERWACYJNE NR 3
Zlokalizowane jest przy ścieżce biegnącej wzdłuż Soły, naprzeciw kopuły byłego śmietniska odpadów komunalnych (ok. 50-70 m od końca ul. Kamieniec). Tematem do omówienia są problemy rekultywacji terenów zdewastowanych przez człowieka. Trzeci odcinek dydaktyczny ma zaledwie ok. 200 m długości i prowadzi w kierunku północno-wschodnim do stanowiska czwartego. Służy obserwacji zbiorowisk roślinnych i fauny wzdłuż ścieżki.Po wejściu w granice użytku ekologicznego „Łęg Kamieniec”, docieramy do dość rozległej polany otoczonej lasem łęgowym, gdzie wyznaczono
STANOWISKO OBSERWACYJNE NR 4
do omówienia ekosystemu łąkowego i głównych przedstawicieli flory i fauny tego typu siedlisk. Czwarty odcinek dydaktyczny biegnie ścieżką, wzdłuż linii energetycznej, pośród polan otoczonych lasami łęgowymi, aż do północno-wschodniej granicy użytku ekologicznego 'Łęg Kamieniec”; trasa ma ok. 600 m długości. Tematem do omówienia są wykształcone tu typy roślinności nieleśnej i różne stadia sukcesji łąk w kierunku zbiorowisk zaroślowych oraz fauna występująca na polanach śródleśnych.
STANOWISKO OBSERWACYJNE NR 5
Znajduje się na terenie żwirowiska przy brzegu Soły, w pobliżu syfonu kanalizacyjnego, tuż przy północno-wschodniej granicy użytku ekologicznego „Łęg Kamieniec”. Stanowisko służy omówieniu roślin występujących na żwirowiskach nadrzecznych i zwierząt, których rozwój związany jest z rzeką. Piąty odcinek dydaktyczny prowadzi ścieżką wzdłuż Soły do miejsca nieco poniżej mostu Jagiellońskiego; ma ok. 250 m długości. Są to tereny silnie antropogeniczne zmienione, opanowane przez zbiorowiska synontropijne. Celem tego stanowiska jest przedstawienie charakteru fauny i flory.
STANOWISKO OBSERWACYJNE NR 6,
zlokalizowane jest w połowie drogi pomiędzy mostem Jagiellońskim a kładką dla pieszych. Wyznaczono je do ogólnego scharakteryzowania terenu parkowego. Szósty odcinek dydaktyczny biegnie asfaltową ścieżką wzdłuż terenów parkowych, aż do kładki dla pieszych znajdującej się poniżej mostu Piastowskiego; ma ok. 900 m długości. Na odcinku tym można zaprezentować florę parku, szczególnie nasadzane drzewa i krzewy oraz występującą tu faunę.
Po przejściu przez kładkę dla pieszych (znajdującą się obok zamku) na lewy brzeg Soły, podążamy ścieżką ku rzece, w kierunku użytku ekologicznego „Łęg Błonie”. Po przejściu ok. 100 m docieramy do
STANOWISKA OBSERWACYJNEGO NR 7.
Służy omówieniu budowy ekosystemów leśnych i charakterystyki łęgów wierzbowo-topolowych. Siódmy odcinek dydaktyczny trasy prowadzi ścieżką pośród zwartych lasów łęgowych (użytek ekologiczny „Łęg Błonie”), aż do nasypu linii kolejowej Oświęcim- Kraków Płaszów ma ok. 700 m długości. Na odcinku tym można zapoznać się z florą i fauną łęgów wierzbowo-topolowych. Po dotarciu do nasypu kolejowego, gdzie kończymy naszą wycieczkę, kierujemy się w lewo (na zachód) i podążamy w kierunku dzielnicy Błonie ? do przystanku komunikacji miejskiej.
Zabytki miasta Oświęcim i trasy turystyczne
Die Stadt Oświęcim besitzt eine einzigartige Sammlung monumentaler Gemälde an Gebäuden in verschiedenen Stadtteilen. Die meisten beziehen sich auf die Förderung des Friedens, den Abbau von Barrieren und kulturellen Stereotypen sowie die Vermittlung von Toleranz. Es ist zur Tradition geworden, dass ein berühmter Künstler in Oświęcim ein von ihm entworfenes Wandgemälde enthüllt, das sich auf die friedliche Botschaft des Life Festival Oświęcim bezieht, das von der Peace Festival Foundation organisiert wird. Alle Wandbilder tragen die Unterschriften ihrer Autoren. Die meisten der präsentierten Wandbilder wurden mit finanzieller Unterstützung der Stadt Oświęcim hergestellt. Wir ermutigen Sie zu Fuß!

Edward Dwurnik is one of the most recognizable figures of contemporary Polish art – unruly and provocative, volatile, unpredictable and full of devilish sense of humor. His works create a stir and evoke extreme emotions, even among the youngest generation of artists.
Oświęcim is a specific place, associated with the museum (Auschwitz-Birkenau – editor’s note) and the Holocaust. It immediately occurred to me that I should paint the pre-war musicians who would play the double-basses. It turned out that the festival organizers want to break the spell of this place – they want Oświecim to become a normal city, and not the one with the camp trauma. I ended up painting young people who play the beautiful orange double-basses. All these characters and these beautiful instruments will be depicted on the background of my beloved Prussian blue.

The well-known Polish graphic artist Andrzej Pągowski has designed over a thousand posters. He is also an author of numerous book and magazine illustrations, CD booklets, TV and theatre stage designs as well as TV and music videos screenplays.
When I received a phone call with an information that I will have an opportunity to make a mural here in Oswiecim, I thought that this is something extraordinary. I’m celebrating 35th anniversary of my artistic work – so it’s an important year for me, and many years ago my father’s entire family was killed in Auschwitz. I thought that I, going back to Oswiecim and making that mural on peace and music, not only give evidence of a non-political declaration but also show that there are people of culture and art in the world who show through their work their wish to live in peace and not in war. We leave such symbols for you to think about. Such declarations and traces are of great significance. Music is important to me, especially rock music, that?s why Oswiecim will get this mural. (?) I was looking for a symbol that would come into being in the street. The location is brilliant, clean, it gives an artist a chance to create a powerful symbol. It’s not a poster – I have tried to find a rather strong sign for this wall.

Rafal Olbiński is a very versatile and intriguing artist. Painter, illustrator, graphic artist, designer, set designer, poster artist. His works are characterized by an individual, unique style, a bit on the borderline of symbolism and surrealism. The artist is highly prized in Poland and abroad. Several meanings can be found in this project. It is to encourage reflection which people do not have time for any more. Connected with headphones to the control panel which makes the choice for us, we watch what we are shown on TV and read what is written in the newspapers. I don?t like excessive pathos and visual propaganda which blooms around us ? advertising of products, forceful instilling of ideas. This pathos evokes emotions which often we do not want to exhibit. Therefore, the design of the mural is based on the basic aesthetics with a non-aggressive message. It is a return to the simplest things in life, namely the beauty we are too busy to notice. Beauty we have lost in our pursuit of millions of other things. Beauty which has ceased to be trendy, and which actually is one of the basic human needs. Beauty which was not invented by advertising agencies. It?s a return to the beauty around us.

For me, creating the continuation of my previous work is really fascinating I?m very excited to have an opportunity to create second mural that corresponds and co-operates with the first one. They complement each other and together they will make a unity. This will be a kind of visual conversation of both projects. Their combined message will be more powerful and will have a stronger effect on people. I hope that these works will let us find the beauty we miss in everyday rush.

TALKING HEADS
In seven locations of the city, the walls have been painted with the images of widely recognized figures: intellectuals, philosophers, thinkers, scientists, along with a short maxim which is characteristic for their activity or work. Seven figures have been selected for the project: Leszek Kołakowski (5- Olszewskiego St.), Jacek Kuroń (6- Berka Joselewicza St.), Maria Skłodowska-Curie (7- Kościelna St.), Martin Luter King (8- Stolarska St.) , John Paul II (9- Klasztorna St.), Mahatma Gandhi (10- Bulwary St.) oraz Vaclav Havel (11- Dąbrowskiego St.). Their images aim to promote, especially among the younger generation, such values as tolerance, human rights, peace, democracy, and civil society. The theme of murals also makes a reference to the ever-present problems of contemporary world. It is aimed to provoke thought and sensitize so that now and in the future the risks associated with the experience of Auschwitz could be accurately identified and people could learn how to respond properly to them.
The murals were created as part of the project organized by the Auschwitz Jewish Center during Oswiecim Life Festival 2012 by young residents of Oswiecim: Tomasz Kiek (realization) oraz Mateusz Makarewicz (designs).

location: 18 Kolbego St. (side elevation of the commercial building)

A mural designed by prof. Elżbieta Kuraj – Karbowniczek was made by young artists from Oswiecim: Kinga Jung, Marcelina Gajda, Krzysztof Katerla, Magdalena Kobielska, Martyna Paluchiewicz, Kinga Pawlik, Anna Żubrowska and the author of the design herself. The mural is an impression on the pre-war and contemporary panorama of Oświęcim. The painting was created in 2012 as part of the periodic event „Artyści Miastu” („The Artists for the City”)
SAINT JOHN BOSCO – PRAY FOR US!

realization: 2014
The mural was made as part of the program „The heritage of Małopolska – an educational voucher” during the implementation of the project: „Together” Polish-Ukrainian artistic and cultural meetings at 7th „Jackowe Granie” Małopolska Festival. It was designed by Dawid Szydło, a graduate of the Salesian school in Oswiecim and made by young people from Poland and Ukraine.
CATHEDRAL

The mural takes an area of almost 200 sq m. It is a still from the famous animated movie Cathedral by Tomasz Bagiński, in 2003 nominated for an Oscar in the short animated movie category. Tomasz Bagiński is a Polish illustrator, animator and director. He is a self-taught artist known mainly as the creator of animation. The artist?s works are often inspired by the paintings of Zdzisław Beksiński, the science-fiction prose of Jacek Dukaj and popular culture.

Heiko Klohn is a German artist from Dachau. He creats drawings, paintings, design graphics and posters. Klohn is a member of the Union of Visual Artists (BBK) in Munich and the Association of Artists in Dachau (KVD).
